1 Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1 is an appropriate introduction to the book of Psalms. It describes for us the difference between the righteous and the wicked.
What do we learn from this?
The psalmist begins by telling us some things that do not mark the life of a righteous person. These are all things common to the wicked and the righteous will avoid them.
But then the psalmist turns to the positive and tells us what the righteous does do: delight in the law of the LORD and meditate upon it regularly. Whereas the ungodly don’t care about Scripture, God’s people desires to know it.
The godly person loves God’s word, studies it intently, and thinks about it. What does this passage mean? How should it impact my life? What is the application? The person who loves God will consider these things.
Where is Christ in this passage?
Jesus Christ Himself has told us that all the scriptures speak of Him. So as we are studying God’s word, we are studying that which points us to Jesus Christ. Part of what we should do in searching the scriptures is to seek for Jesus Christ revealed to us in God’s word.
